Center for Device Innovation to Accelerate Medical Device Development

The new Center for Device Innovation at the Texas Medical Center was opened recently in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson Innovation LLC. The new medical device development center will accelerate the medical device development process, from concept to product commercialization, allowing rapid innovation of new medical devices.

The new Medical Device Development Center is located in the TMC innovation institute’s 26,000 square foot facility, providing the controlled environments, medical device production technologies and resources, enabling the Johnson & Johnson research and development staff to rapid prototype and bring new medical devices to market. The new medical device development center will house every stage of the medical device product development life cycle, reducing the cost of new developments and minimizing the time to market.

Medical Device Rapid Prototyping

The Center for Device Innovation at the Texas Medical Center is focused on current healthcare challenges and technical needs in the medical device industry. With this keen focus on understanding market demands, the R&D staff is enabled to innovate new technologies, develop prototypes quickly, and if warranted, develop and productize relevant patient solutions. Through the collaboration, CDI @ TMC medical device R&D staff have accessibility to the Texas Medical Center network’s other preclinical facilities including:

  • Baylor College of Medicine
  • Houston Methodist Hospital
  • Texas Heart Institute

“We are excited to build upon our collaboration with the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies through the launch of the Center for Device Innovation at the Texas Medical Center,”

William F. McKeon, President and CEO, Texas Medical Center.

Center for Device Innovation @ Texas Medical Center enables concept-to-commercialization, including rapid prototyping, to address patient solutions.

The Center for Medical Device Development can be described as an “engineering studio,” the rapid prototyping facility provides the tools and technology to take product concepts and ideas and turn them into real life prototypes that might eventually be developed as “go-to-market” products. The medical device development facility comes equipped with a machine shop, a mechanical testing laboratory, an electronics environment and component laboratory, a 3D printing lab and a virtual reality demo room. The space itself is designed to encourage creativity and innovation.

“We have already experienced tremendous growth within our ecosystem, and we believe that the CDI @ TMC will serve as a cornerstone for medical device invention and commercialization, further advancing our leadership in life sciences.”
